TRADITIONAL/MODERN

It might be helpful and interesting to visualise and understand the differences between
modern and traditional techniques in upholstery. They are both of equal comfort,
traditional will feel harder to start with but will last longer. The traditional method is a
longer process so more costly. Shown below are the steps needed in both techniques.

   TRADITIONAL

Once the seat is sprung and the springs are lashed, they are covered with hessian then
fibre. The fibre then needs a cover of scrim to hold and form the shape of the seat.

More fibre is added to the edge of the seat to make it very firm. Then two rows of blind
stitches are used to firm up the seat edge and a top stitch to form a roll on the edge.
Bridal ties will hold the stuffing in place and a layer of mixed animal hair is then applied.
Cotton felt on the front of the seat and calico to cover it all.

The calico is tacked down shaping the seat, a layer of skin wadding over the top will
prevent any hairs from poking through. Top fabric is layed on and tacked. Done.

    MODERN

Same start here with the hessian covering the springs. Fibre is then placed on the edges.
A sheet of rubberised hair is laid on and cut.

The rubberised hair is stapled down, the corners are shaped. Blind stitches and top stitch
shape the edge. Then cotton felt and calico. Here top fabric with piping on the edge.
